Pending an authorised Statement by the Authorities

of the HongKong University, the following Memorandum embodies the information at present in the possession of the Colonial Office.

Buildings and Endowment.

Buildings

The University is open to students of all races and creeds but it is anticipated that they will be chiefly Chinese. The main building (which is very hand some and commands a magnificent sea-view) com- prises a Great Hall (80' x 50') and numerous lecture

rooms, laboratories, work-shops, libraries, common-

room etc. calculated to accommodate 500 students and

capable of extension later. In addition there is a

Principal's House, and two buildings for Professors,

with a block of students' quarters. The Church Mis- sionary Society have built a Hostel adjoining the University grounds, and the London Missionary Society have acquired a site for second. It is believed that

the Roman Catholic Mission also intend to build a

Hostel. With the exception of the Students' quarters the buildings were given by the late Sir H.Mody and

the University has incurred no debt in respect of

them.

An Endowment Fund of over a million dollars.

(£100,000) has been raised, together with £40,000 in

Sterling or debentures, and these sums have been in-

vested. From this sum however the cost of fittings,

furniture and equipment has to be deducted, and a
